The Hillside View Extension

The Brief

Set on a tightly positioned hillside site in the wider Wellington region, this existing home no longer met the needs of a growing family. The layout felt enclosed, with living areas disconnected from outdoor spaces and limited opportunity to enjoy the elevated outlook.

NZ Proud was engaged to deliver a considered home alteration and extension, reconfiguring the layout to create a larger open-plan living area, improving indoor–outdoor flow, and maximising natural light and views across the surrounding hills and neighbourhood. The goal was to modernise the home while retaining elements of its original character.

How we elevated the home

This Wellington home extension introduced a carefully designed addition that significantly expands the main living areas, creating a bright, open-plan space that now forms the heart of the home. The reconfigured layout improves flow and usability, supporting modern family living and entertaining.

Large sliding doors and expansive glazing connect the interior to a newly designed outdoor deck, enhancing indoor–outdoor flow and allowing natural light to fill the home throughout the day. The outdoor living area provides multiple zones for dining, relaxing, and entertaining, all positioned to take advantage of the elevated hillside setting.

Externally, the alteration modernises the rear of the home while maintaining the character of the original structure, a key consideration in many renovation and extension projects across Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast. The addition of an upper-level balcony and covered outdoor area further strengthens the connection between the home and its surroundings, creating a flexible and functional space designed for year-round use.
