The Modern Farmhouse Retreat

The Brief

Located in Ōhau, within the wider Kāpiti Coast region north of Wellington, this new build was designed to reflect the character of its rural setting while providing a comfortable, functional home for modern family life.

NZ Proud was engaged to design and build a home that balanced clean, contemporary design with practical, long-lasting materials suited to rural conditions. The brief focused on creating a simple, efficient layout, maximising natural light, and strengthening indoor–outdoor flow to connect the home with its surrounding environment.

How we elevated the home

The result is a thoughtfully designed new home that blends durable metal cladding with natural timber, creating a refined yet understated exterior that sits comfortably within the rural Kāpiti landscape. The carefully selected material palette not only complements the environment but also ensures long-term performance in exposed conditions, a key consideration for homes across the Wellington and Kāpiti regions.

Large openings and sliding doors connect the main living areas to an outdoor deck, enhancing indoor–outdoor flow and allowing natural light to fill the home throughout the day. The orientation and layout have been carefully considered to make the most of the site, improving both usability and comfort.

Inside, the home features a clean, functional layout with warm finishes and thoughtful detailing. The design strikes a balance between modern aesthetics and everyday practicality, creating spaces that feel both contemporary and lived-in.

The finished result is a modern rural home that reflects NZ Proud’s expertise in delivering high-quality new builds and residential projects across the Kāpiti Coast, Horowhenua, and wider Wellington region, combining durability, functionality, and timeless design.
